Read moreIf you’re a permanent resident of Canada and have been living here for at least three years out of the last five, congratulations! You’re one step closer to gaining Canadian citizenship!
Canadian citizenship opens up a world of opportunities. It allows you to participate in elections, apply for a Canadian passport, and even enjoy the benefits of dual citizenship.
Here’s a brief overview of what you need to know:
You need to be a permanent resident, be physically present in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years, and have filed your income taxes during that time. Plus, you'll need to prove your language skills and pass a citizenship test!
Most folks can apply online, but if you’ve spent time outside Canada as a crown servant or want someone else to help with your application, you’ll need to apply on paper. Be ready to pay some fees too! For adults, it's around CAD 630.
After submitting your application, you might wait about seven months, but some cases could be expedited.
You’ll need to take a test about Canada's history and culture. Don’t worry; you can prepare with free study guides!
Once you pass your test and everything looks good, you’ll receive an invitation to the citizenship ceremony. It’s a special day where you’ll take the oath of citizenship and officially become a Canadian citizen!
