According to Statistics Canada, 2025 has seen a sharp decline in new arrivals: a staggering 70% fewer international students and a 50% drop in foreign workers compared to last year. That’s over 214,000 fewer newcomers!
But why the drop? Well, Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has implemented new measures to control the influx of temporary residents, that’s why. Less study permit holders are making their way here, while a larger portion of new arrivals are coming as work permit holders, with many seeking Post-Graduation Work Permits.
During the first half of 2025, only 6,070 new study permit holders arrived monthly compared to 20,839 the previous year. Meanwhile, the workforce is on the rise, with 19,872 new work permits being granted monthly!
