Alberta's Library Standards: Ensuring Age-Appropriate Content for Kids

Hey there! Alberta is taking a big step to make sure kids in school libraries only have access to age-appropriate materials. Recently, the government's public engagement survey attracted nearly 80,000 responses from parents, educators, and community members. That’s a lot of voices!

Between May 26 and June 6, people shared their thoughts on what kids should be reading. The results were eye-opening! For example, 42% of parents believe children should never have access to sexually explicit materials in school libraries. It looks like many of us agree that kids should be protected.

The government is now using this feedback to create clear guidelines for school boards. This means that parents, teachers, and librarians will collaborate to select appropriate books that align with community values.

If you want to dive deeper, you can check out the detailed survey results on Alberta.ca. Let’s ensure our libraries reflect the needs and priorities of families across the province!
